Soap Experiments

Our normal method of making cold process soap is using our custom made hdpe soap molds.

A fellow soapmaker made soap using plastic tube shaped bags and the soap came out in nice little rounds.

Since I had some fragrance left over in small amounts I decided to give this a try. Not only would I use up the last of a few discontinued fragrances we would also have cute round soaps to sell!

This turned out to almost be more of a pain than it was worth!

I was doing this by myself so I had to mix the soap to very light trace, work quickly to pour soap into a glass measuring cup, put a funnel in the top of the plastic bag and pour the soap down the funnel then refilling the measuring cup to do again.

Once full I tied of the end of the bags with rubber bands then took a length of twine and tied the bag to a stick so they hung straight.

It’s really hard to twist a rubber band around a plastic bag when you have plastic gloves on (to protect your hands from the raw soap). Then I got the bright idea of scrapping the rubber bands and just poured in less soap and tied the end of the bag in a knot.

It’s really hard to tie the bag into a knot when the gloves have raw soap on them….makes it a tad slippery.

So I took the gloves off and did it bare handed.

Eeeep!

Not the best practice but it worked.

I won’t do this again.
It just wasn’t worth it.

These soaps are still curing and will be sold at the local shows we do this year. We will not have them up on the website.

Herb Garden Collection Now Available

We finally have our revamped Herb Garden product collection done!

We kinda, sorta combined the old herb line with the old gardener line and came up with three WONDERFUL herbal blends that will knock your garden gloves off!

The following products are available in this scent line:
Soap
Lotion (2 sizes)
Sugar Scrubs (2 sizes)

The Herb Garden collection includes the following scent blends:

Basil Sage Mint
A garden medley of basil, clary sage and peppermint sprigs with hints of citrus zests, fresh spring flowers ending with soft, soothing musk.

Bergamot Tarragon (this is my very most favorite!)
Unique herbal blend with top notes of tarragon, grapefruit, and lime followed by middle notes of bergamot and jasmine ending with base notes of oakmoss and bamboo.

Cucumber Wasabi Cilantro (this is my #2 very most favorite)
An exciting and surprising blend with top notes of grapefruit and lime, middle notes of fresh cucumber, guava, and passionfruit ending with base notes of wasabi, cilantro, and fern.

We fully expect all three of these scent collections to sell really well this year!

Testing Phase

What do we mean when we say Testing Phase?

Country Meadow specializes in three products:
Soap (cold process)
Sugar Scrubs
Lotion

Testing Phase: Soap

We have been making soap for over 13 years now and have perfected our formula. The same formula is used for every batch…the only thing that changes between batches is the fragrance and the coloring.

When we test new fragrances in soap we are looking at the following things:

Does the fragrance make the raw soap ‘rice’ or ‘seize’ during manufacture? (if it rices the soap it can sometimes be saved….seizing….mostly not). We purchase our fragrances from a chosen handful of very reputable suppliers and can almost guarantee that all fragrances will work in our soap…but we still hold our breath just a bit when trying a new fragrance for the first time!

Since cold process soap heats up quite a bit during the first 24 hours (the soap is still in the molds) we want to know if the fragrance will hold up to the heat. Does it smell the same after it cures or did the saponification process kill the scent? We also want to know if the color morphs. Sometimes the soap will start out red then as it heats up and cools down then cures for 4 weeks the color may morph to pink or even fade altogether.

Testing Phase: Sugar Scrubs

We use our own formula for our sugar scrubs and the only difference between batches is the fragrance. We have chosen to not color our scrubs so we don’t worry about colorants.

During the original creation of our formula we tested for two things:

Did the emulsion hold up to expectations? (ours is a semi-solid emulsified scrub not an oil-separation scrub)

Did the chosen preservative perform as expected? (any product containing water or has the potential for water to enter during normal use MUST contain a preservative!!!!)

Now that our emulsified sugar scrub has been perfected to a tried-and-true formula we no longer need to worry about testing it! All of our fragrances are compatible with our scrubs.

Testing Phase: Lotion

When testing the original lotion formula we were looking at several things:

Did the emulsion of oil/water perform as expected?
Does the lotion have the consistancy we were hoping for?
Is the consistancy correct and workable for the chosen packaging?
Is the preservative the correct one for this product and is it working? (again, if a product has water listed as an ingredient then it MUST contain a preservative to kill bacteria/mold/yeast!)

If the answer to the above questions is Yes then we really don’t have to worry about any more testing. As with the scrubs all of our chosen fragrances are compatible with our lotion.

Generally speaking most of our testing is now done. We will on occasion send out samples of lotion and sugar scrubs to a local lab to get an APC (Aerobic Plate Count ) test done to make sure our preservative is working like it should (it does!).

We Have Lotion!

Lotion is now available!!!

We now have our reformulated lotion available and it is truly better than ever!

Why did we revamp our formula???

The emulsion system we previously used was purchased pre-made and was available from only one supplier. In addition to not being 100% satisfied with this ingredient I was having second thoughts about doing business with this company as it appeared they were going downhill.

Rather than trying to find another supplier or purchasing it ourselves in large quantities I chose to create a completely new formula not only using our own emulsion system but using different oils and extracts!

We did market research to make sure our lotions offered MORE than competitors products while at the same time giving you the most for your dollar. Our lotion prices may seem a little expensive but take a look at the ingredients!!! High in shea butter (it’s listed as the SECOND ingredient) we also use skin-loving macadamia, peach kernel and rice bran oil along with three beneficial extracts.

When you compare our lotion to others you will see ours is not just water and emulsion ingredients like so many others!

Let’s see just what is in our lotion and why:

Water, Shea Butter, Aloe Barbadensis Juice, Cetearyl Alcohol / Polysorbate 60, Macadamia Nut Oil, Peach Kernel Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Green Tea Extract, Cucumber Extract, Cetyl Alcohol, Polyglycerol-3 Beeswax, Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone, Isopropyl Myristate, Calendula Extract, Vitamin E, Hydrolized Oats, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Benzylalcohol Dehydroacetic Acid, Fragrance, Tetrasodium EDTA

*Water – (Distilled) Any lotion is mostly made up of water. Not only is it a good hydrator you need it to emulsify the ingredients

*Shea Butter – High in Vitamin E shea butter is a natural emollient, moisturizer and anti-oxidant. Shea butter naturally contains allantoin which is approved by the FDA as a barrier ingredient to help prevent and protect chapped, chaffed, cracked or wind burned skin.

*Aloe Barbadensis Juice – The juice is extracted from the pulp of the aloe barbadensis plant and has been used topically for its skin soothing properties.

*Cetearyl Alcohol / Polysorbate 60 – Water and oil do not mix so you need an emulsifier to bind the two together. Vegetable derived fatty acid for an emollient feel to the skin. Serves as a co-emulsifer.

*Macadamia Nut Oil – Expeller extracted emollient oil with high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids. Also has a high percentage of palmitoleic oil – good for anti-aging.

*Peach Kernel Oil – Cold pressed oil containing fatty acids that are nourishing and moisturizing.

*Rice Bran Oil – High in antioxidants such as tocopherol and tocotrienol.

*Green Tea Extract – Has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties

*Cucumber Extract – Extracted by steam distillation. Used for its soothing and toning properties.

*Cetyl Alcohol – A fatty alcohol used as an emulsion stabilizer. Imparts emollient properties as it lubricates and softens the skin. Vegetable based.

* Polyglycerol-3 Beeswax – A hydrophilic derivative of natural beeswax. Used as a co-emulsifier. Imparts a smooth, satin like feel to the skin.

*Cyclomethicone – A cyclic silicone with a low molecular weight used for its non-greasy, silky emolliency.

*Dimethicone – Also known as silicone oil (derived from silica (sand and quartz are silicas)) used as a barrier ingredient protecting the skin from outside elements.

* Isopropyl Myristate – Vegetable based emollient ester used to impart a dry, velvety feel

* Calendula Extract – Natural botanical extract used for its healing properties.

*Vitamin E – Used for its natural anti-oxidant, anti-aging and moisturizing properties

*Hydrolized Oats – Naturally derived from of whole oats. Imparts a soft, velvety smoothness to skin.

* Hydroxyethyl Urea – Used in place of glycerin (which can leave a tacky feel) for its moisturizing properties

* Benzylalcohol Dehydroacetic Acid – A broad spectrum preservative that is paraben free. Works against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast and molds. Product is not animal tested and is eco-certified. (Please be extremely wary of products that do not list a preservative. Any product that contains water or has the chance of water being introduced during use MUST contain a preservative to combat bacteria, yeast and mold)

*Fragrance – All of our products contain fragrance oil. Fragrance oils can contain both natural and synthetic ingredients. Fragrance oil ingredients are proprietary information and the manufacturer of those oils are not required to disclose the formula. All fragrance oils we purchase are from reputable suppliers and are formulated according to the FDA and IFRA guidelines. All fragrance oils are phthalate free.

* Tetrasodium EDTA – Is a chelating agent that binds with metal ions and keeps them from being reactive thereby slowing down the oxidation process of our ingredients. Is also used as a co-preservative.

As you can see we do not use filler ingredients. We chose our ingredients very carefully keeping in mind the quality of product we wanted to offer as well as an affordable price point for the consumer. With our lotion a little bit goes a long way!

Patchouli Is Limited

My husband and I LOVE patchouli and our Patchouli (straight up!) soap is the best (no lie!).

It is the best because we use a high quality aged patchouli essential oil purchased from ONE supplier…..
Why one supplier?

Because I trust them with this oil!!!

Not all patchouli essential oils are the same.
And some patchouli soaps are made with patchouli FRAGRANCE OIL which is NOT the same as essential oil.

We will not compromise on this product.

It’s patchouli essential oil or…..
nothing.

Which brings me to the main subject:

We are halfway through our stock of Patchouli soap so I did a price check (yes with the one supplier) on the cost of patchouli. It’s through the roof….still…. even more so than when we purchased it last time.

Even when you love a product there comes a time when you have to say…..enough.
The cost does not warrant the product.
Sure we could buy the patchouli and make the soap and rasie the price even more than it is now…
But would anyone pay over $7.00 for a 4.5 oz. of soap???

My guess is….not many.

So here is an advanced warning:

Our Patchouli (straight up!) soap is in limited supply.
When it’s gone it will be gone until the price of patchouli essential oil comes down.

We could compromise and purchase patchouli fragrance oil…but then it just wouldn’t be the same.

However, we ARE working on a couple of patchouli blends and will have them available by the end of spring!

Buyer beware….
Of cheaply priced patchouli soap…

It’s either made with fragrance oil (which simply can NOT compare to the real thing), a low quality essential oil or very little essential oil at all.

Melissa Pear – Limited Supply

Melissa Pear of our ‘Pear’ collection quickly became a hit last year.

Unfortunately the company that we got this fragrance from is no more and the ‘new’ company doesn’t really seem interested in carrying it. I have searched high and low for this fragrance and just can’t find it.

So…

Once our current stock of Melissa Pear is gone….it’s gone for good.
We will carry this fragrance in soap only and will NOT be offering it in lotion or sugar scrubs.

I am on the search for a replacement ‘pear’.
