Friday Free For All

Misc. Tidbits of the Week:

**Funny how most of the spammers who sign up on our blog as a member have the email address ending in ru..which is Russia..right?
Needless to say they are immediately deleted without a second thought!

**BP touts containment efforts; heavy oil reaches Louisiana wetlands
This….Will…Never….End

**On the weekend hubs runs around a local lake and since we want to socialize Brodie both with strangers and other dogs I have been taking him along. He has done very well but for some reason he wants to jog along with everyone heh heh!

Last weekend we met a nice man who had two HUGE Spinone Italiano’s! These dogs were gigantic and very well mannered and they both gave Brodie a nice welcome!

**We start puppy preschool this weekend. It runs for 3 weeks and I think is geared towards teaching the puppy how to get along with other puppies (read: socializing). I have already signed him up for puppy obedience class after this one ends.

**I found a local group of very nice people who make and sell handmade products both on their own website and etsy.

I had made a half-hearted attempt at putting products on etsy however it’s all I can do to just keep up with our website and normal networking projects so I didn’t really work it much.

Because I am interested in all aspects of small business (especially local ones!) and would love to network/market with other like-minded people I joined and was accepted into the Seattle ‘Street Team’ EtsyRain! I am looking forward to our Meetups!

**I have 5 weeks to get ready for the Marysville Strawberry Festival Market in the Park (details to come later). I have been in a marathon soap making mode making as much as I can so it has time to cure (4 weeks) before packaging. We will have a few new soaps that will debut that weekend!

**And of course I can’t sign off without adding a few new pictures of Brodie!

What a Handsome Fella!

Eco News: Eco Skyscraper

A water purifying skycraper…
How cool is that!

A skyscraper designed to make a rotten river run clean
By Emanuele Comi for CNN

Imagine a skyscraper that — instead of hosting offices — houses a system that purifies the water of a polluted river, employs the people living in surrounding slums and gives them a home in which to live.

That’s the revolutionary idea behind an architectural concept that aims to solve the problems generated by the polluted Ciliwung River in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

The largest of 13 rivers which run through Jakarta, the Ciliwung flows through 72 subdistricts of the city.

Along its river banks lie a ramshackle collection of illegal slums and around 400 businesses, according to a recent report by the Jakarta Capital City Provincial Government.

The residents have long used the river as a dumping ground for household waste, so much so that the river is now classified as “heavily polluted.”

But four Indonesian architects — Rezza Rahdian, Erwin Setiawan, Ayu Diah Shanti and Leonardus Chrisnantyo — have a vision for cleaning up the river.

They submitted their idea for a so-called “purification skyscraper” to U.S.-based architecture and design journal eVolo’s skyscraper competition and won second place.

First place went to three Malaysian design students who devised a prison city in the sky where inmates would live freely in a community with agricultural fields to supply the city below.

Diah Shanti, one of the architects involved in the Ciliwung project, said: “The idea of [a] purification skyscraper came up when we thought of an environmental machine concept.”

The “machine” would work through different lines.

A filter would first separate the rubbish and organic waste from the river’s brown water. Dangerous contaminants would then be eliminated and minerals added.

At the end of the process, clean water would be available for the people and distributed to the land nearby through a system of pipes.

To become reality, the concept, called the Ciliwung Recovery Program, needs support from the government and local investors — and a lot of luck.

“Obviously it will take a lot of help and good cooperation to make such idea become real,” Shanti said.

Ingredient Of The Week: Epsom Salt

The Epsom Salt Council

The Science of Epsom Salt
Magnesium is the second-most abundant element in human cells and the fourth-most important positively charged ion in the body, so it’s little wonder this low-profile mineral is so vital to good health and well being. Magnesium, a major component of Epsom Salt, also helps to regulate the activity of more than 325 enzymes and performs a vital role in orchestrating many bodily functions, from muscle control and electrical impulses to energy production and the elimination of harmful toxins.

The National Academy of Sciences, however, reports that most Americans are magnesium deficient, helping to account for our society’s high rate of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, arthritis and joint pain, digestive maladies and stress-related illnesses, chronic fatigue and a host of other ailments. The Academy estimates the average American male gets just 80% of the magnesium required for good health, while females get only 70% of their recommended levels. Nutritionists say Americans’ magnesium levels have dropped more than 50% in the past century.

Beauty Benefits
May soften skin and exfoliate
Provides magnesium, which has been shown to:
Ease stress
Lower blood pressure
Create a happy, relaxed feeling
Raise energy levels

Health Benefits
Studies show these benefits from the major components of Epsom Salt may:

Magnesium:
Ease stress and improves sleep and concentration
Help muscles and nerves function properly
Regulate activity of 325+ enzymes

Cool Product: Little Buddy Pet Place

So……
We have a new puppy (AmStaff) and of course I have to browse for new puppy/dog stuff to buy!

With our other dogs (English Bull Terriers) we had to be careful what we bought as far as toys were concerned because they would destroy everything…..within minutes. Which meant we could not buy cutesy stuffed toys, squeeker toys, or any other fun-type toy. We were basically stuck with tennis balls, rubber tire toys, ropes and Kong-type toys….indestructible! This also meant we could not outfit them with cool looking bandanas (I always liked these on dogs!) as I knew it would only be a matter of minutes before they ripped and tore them off of each other (we had two bullies).

Now we have Brodie (AmStaff puppy) and Maggie (English Bull Terrier) and from what I have been reading about AmStaff’s they seem to have a more reasonably calm personality than the Bull Terriers do. For the last ten years we had two Bull Terriers and I can assure you it was like living with a ten year tornado!

So I’m currently window shopping for Brodie.
I think he would look quite handsome in a bandana but I’m going to wait a while while he grows before I start buying any. The way he is growing he would outgrow any I buy now in no time!

For a great selection of dog bandanas check out:

Little Buddy Pet Place

I have added them to our Favorite Vendor list and I’ve bookmarked them as a personal favorite.

I love this one!

Eco News: Oil Spills-A History of Disasters

The most recent oil rig accident/disaster has me fit to be tied.

I know we need and depend on oil but you would think BP and any other oil drilling company would have contingency plans in place so when a catastrophic accident happens they can respond sooner and more efficiently.

Only time will tell just how bad this most recent event will effect coastal shores, marine life and the people and businesses that depend on both.

Makes me want to cry….

Oil Spills: A History Of Disaster (PHOTOS)

The recent disaster that occurred at a BP offshore drilling site near Louisiana–seriously injuring 17 workers, leaving 11 still missing, and leaking 5,000 barrels a day of oil into the Gulf of Mexico each day–is a tragic reminder of the threat oil drilling poses daily to our citizens and our environment. This latest catastrophe may even end up leaking more oil into our ocean than Exxon Valdez did.

From 1973 to 1990 an average of 11.8 million gallons of oil spilled every year into American waters. Since 1990, that number has been reduced to 1.5 million gallons a year.

The oil industry is no stranger to terrible accidents, and we’ve compiled a time line with 9 of the worst oil disasters in American history to highlight the consequences of our dependence on dirty fossil fuels. Keep in mind, these are but a fraction of the overall oil-related mishaps that have occurred in the United States.

Recipe Of The Week: Healthy Snacks

31 Days of Healthy Snack Ideas

When hunger strikes in between meals, it’s tough to resist the urge to munch on chips, cookies, and other bad-for-you treats. But choosing healthier snacks can keep you satisfied until your next meal without wreaking havoc on your waistline. Stay on the healthy track all month long with these 31 enjoyable low-calorie snacks. Let the snacking begin!

So today let’s pick just one!

Kiwi Ice Pops
From Country Living

Kiwi ice pops appeal to kids and adults alike. This recipe is not only mouthwatering but no fuss, making it one of the coolest ways to extinguish summer’s sizzle. Williams-Sonoma’s vintage-inspired Pop-Up Molds (six 2-ounce containers for $18) are easy to use, durable, dishwasher safe, and available in stores, by mail (800-541-2233), or on the Web (williams-sonoma.com).

Ingredients
1 3/4 cup(s) water
1 cup(s) sugar
4 kiwis
1/2 cup(s) (about 4 limes) fresh lime juice

Directions
Make the syrup: Combine 1 cup of water with the sugar in a small saucepan and bring just to a boil. Set aside to cool.
Make the ice pops: Using a paring knife, cut kiwis into quarters, peel, and remove the white core and seeds from each piece. Place the seeded kiwi pieces in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade and purée to a liquid — about 1 minute. Combine the puréed kiwi, 3/4 cup syrup, lime juice, and remaining 3/4 cup water in a large bowl. Pour the mixture into molds and freeze until solid — about 6 hours.

Ingredient Of The Week: Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera, also known as the medicinal aloe, is a species of succulent plant that probably originated in Northern Africa, the Canary islands and Cape Verde. Aloe vera grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa, India and other arid areas. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine. Many scientific studies of the use of aloe vera have been undertaken, some of them conflicting. Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that Aloe vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, diabetes and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones and lectins.

Description
Aloe vera is a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant growing to 60–100 cm (24–39 in) tall, spreading by offsets. The leaves are thick and fleshy, green to grey-green, with some varieties showing white flecks on the upper and lower stem surfaces. The margin of the leaf is serrated and has small white teeth. The flowers are produced in summer on a spike up to 90 cm (35 in) tall, each flower pendulous, with a yellow tubular corolla 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 in) long. Like other Aloe species, Aloe vera forms arbuscular mycorrhiza, a symbiosis that allows the plant better access to mineral nutrients in soil.

Medicinal Uses
Scientific evidence for the cosmetic and therapeutic effectiveness of Aloe vera is limited and when present is typically contradictory. Despite this, the cosmetic and alternative medicine industries regularly make claims regarding the soothing, moisturising and healing properties of Aloe vera, especially via Internet advertising.  Aloe vera gel is used as an ingredient in commercially available lotion, yogurt, beverages and some desserts.  Aloe vera juice is used for consumption and relief of digestive issues such as heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome. It is common practice for cosmetic companies to add sap or other derivatives from Aloe vera to products such as makeup, tissues, moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, incense, razors and shampoos.  Other uses for extracts of Aloe vera include the dilution of semen for the artificial fertilization of sheep,  use as fresh food preservative,  and use in water conservation in small farms.

Aloe vera juice for ingestion.Aloe vera has a long association with herbal medicine, although it is not known when its medical applications were first discovered. Early records of Aloe vera use appear in the Ebers Papyrus from 16th century BCE,  in both Dioscorides’ De Materia Medica and Pliny the Elder’s Natural History written in the mid-first century CE  along with the Juliana Anicia Codex produced in 512 CE.  Aloe vera is non-toxic, with no known side effects, provided the aloin has been removed by processing. Taking Aloe vera that contains aloin in excess amounts has been associated with various side effects. However, the species is used widely in the traditional herbal medicine of China, Japan, Russia, South Africa, the United States, Jamaica and India.

Aloe vera is alleged to be effective in treatment of wounds.  Evidence on the effects of Aloe vera sap on wound healing, however, is limited and contradictory.  Some studies, for example, show that Aloe vera promotes the rates of healing, while in contrast, other studies show that wounds to which Aloe vera gel was applied were significantly slower to heal than those treated with conventional medical preparations.  A more recent review (2007) concludes that the cumulative evidence supports the use of Aloe vera for the healing of first to second degree burns.  In addition to topical use in wound or burn healing, internal intake of Aloe vera has been linked with improved blood glucose levels in diabetics,  and with lower blood lipids in hyperlipidaemic patients,  but also with acute hepatitis (liver disease).  In other diseases, preliminary studies have suggested oral Aloe vera gel may reduce symptoms and inflammation in patients with ulcerative colitis. Compounds extracted from Aloe vera have been used as an immunostimulant that aids in fighting cancers in cats and dogs; however, this treatment has not been scientifically tested in humans. The injection of Aloe vera extracts to treat cancer has resulted in the deaths of several patients.

Topical application of Aloe vera may be effective for genital herpes and psoriasis. However, it is not effective for the prevention of radiation-induced injuries. Although anecdotally useful, it has not been proven to offer protection from sunburn or suntan.  In a double-blind clinical trial the group using an Aloe vera containing dentifrice and the group using a fluoridated dentifrice both demonstrated a statistically significant reduction of gingivitis and plaque.

Aloe vera extracts have antibacterial and antifungal activities. Aloe vera extracts have been shown to inhibit the growth of fungi that cause tinea;  however, evidence for control beneath human skin remains to be established. For its anti-fungal properties, Aloe vera is used as a fish tank water conditioner. For bacteria, inner-leaf gel from Aloe vera was shown to inhibit growth of Streptococcus and Shigella species in vitro.  In contrast, Aloe vera extracts failed to show antibiotic properties against Xanthomonas species
