Microsoft Office 2003

About a week ago when trying to open up a saved document Word wanted to open up in ‘safe mode’. I did that and I can work on saved documents however I know this should be fixed.

I’ve tried doing the repair thing and I’ve even reinstalled it but it still wants to open in ‘safe mode’. I’ve searched online but I’m just not finding the information I need in order to get this working like it’s supposed to.

Any suggestions?

Airport Security – Body Scans

I don’t fly.
I don’t do boats either.
If I can’t get there on wheels then I don’t need to go.

I understand airport security.
However, I have a little problem with full body scans.

Pumpkin Bars

In November I made the pumpkin bars posted HERE.

They were absolutely delicious!

So I’m wondering why the last person to have some didn’t just eat the teeny, tiny 1″ piece that was left?

It looks so lonely.

Eco News: Local Asphalt Company Recycles

Asphalt Company Saves $1M by Recycling
by Trey Granger

Almond & Son’s Asphalt, based in Richland, Wash., found a way to save $1 million in difficult economic times.

The company is recycling its own asphalt into new material and is now looking to recycle other businesses’ asphalt with its new 1.5-acre facility located next to the Richland Landfill.

Almond recycles the asphalt by heating it to temperatures exceeding 250 degrees, creating a liquid form that can either be used by the company or sold to other businesses.

Prior to its new facility, Almond was paying a separate company to recycle the waste material and then buying it back, which cost about $1 million in 2008.

“There’s an opportunity to take that material, not put it in a landfill, but to send it to some of these other businesses at the same time,” Kip Eagles, solid waste manager for the City, told The Tacoma News-Tribune.

Almond is just one of the businesses that will occupy 50 acres of land surrounding the landfill, also called the “Eco Park.” The City is currently in talks with a wood recycling company to build a facility in the area as well, according to The Tacoma News-Tribune.

The EPA estimates that the U.S. produces 170 million tons of construction and demolition (C&D) debris each year. This is equivalent to 30 percent of our overall waste, according to the U.S. Green Building Council.

C&D debris not only includes building materials such as asphalt, steel beams and windows, but also potentially products that require special disposal processes, such as paint and smoke detectors.

Eco News: Starbucks & Recycling

Starbucks Takes Recycling to a Whole New Local Level
by Trey Granger

When you oversee more than 11,000 stores across the U.S., it’s easy to think of recycling on a national level. But for coffee retailer Starbucks the key lies in the availability of local recycling options.

Starbucks is currently working with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to determine what recycling barriers exist in each U.S. city and how to overcome them. Starbucks Director of Environmental Impact Jim Hanna even spoke at the annual U.S. Mayors Conference last week.

Addressing the situation from multiple angles, the coffee giant has already committed to developing a 100 percent recyclable cup by 2012, which will be recyclable with other paper.

But the company also wants to ensure that customers have access to recycling opportunities, such as in Seattle where the cups can be recycled in curbside programs. By working with U.S. mayors, Starbucks is hoping to reach its goal of recycling availability in 100 percent of its stores by 2015.

As part of this effort, Starbucks is currently keeping pace with community laws and programs for recycling. When San Francisco passed its mandatory composting ordinance last year, Starbucks added recycling and compost bins to the front of its San Francisco stores. It also began recycling coffee cups in Manhattan last year with help from Global Green USA.

In a 2005 waste audit, Starbucks found that 34 percent of its waste (by weight) was coffee grounds, which can be composted. Its paper waste (e.g. cardboard and newspaper) amounted to 25 percent, which can be recycled if the stores have access to paper recycling in their community.

Recipes – 31 Days of Casseroles

Whoa!

Delish has a whole month of delish-looking casseroles for your cooking pleasure! Eat something different every night!

31 Days of Casseroles

The weather is cold…your oven is hot…. We think the answer to your dinner dilemma is clear: casseroles and lots of them! Give your casserole dish a workout this season with these crowd-pleasing one-dish dinner recipes, enough for every night of the month. Magical things happen when veggies, meat, and legumes get together in one oven.

Since I love cheese and noodles this one caught my eye

Three-Cheese Baked Pasta

Ingredients

1/4 cup(s) extra-virgin olive oil
4 red bell peppers, thinly sliced
1 large onion, thinly sliced
6 garlic cloves, 4 halved, 2 minced
Salt
1 teaspoon(s) chipotle powder
1 28-ounce can plum tomatoes, drained and juices reserved
3 cup(s) fresh ricotta cheese
3/4 cup(s) freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup(s) shredded fresh mozzarella
Freshly ground pepper
1 pound(s) trenne or rigatoni pasta
1 tablespoon(s) melted unsalted butter

Directions

In a medium sized, enameled, cast-iron casserole, heat the oil. Add the peppers, onion, halved garlic and a pinch of salt. Cover and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften, 15 minutes. Add the chipotle powder and cook uncovered, stirring, until the vegetables are lightly browned, 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and their juices, cover and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes. Scrape the sauce into a food processor and puree. Wipe out the casserole. Strain the sauce into it and season with salt; keep warm.

Preheat the oven to 375F°. Butter a 10-by-14-inch glass baking dish. In a bowl, mix the ricotta with the minced garlic, 1/2 cup of the Parmesan and the mozzarella. Season with salt and pepper.

Cook the pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water until almost al dente. Drain the pasta and return it to the pot, then toss with 2 cups of the sauce. Spread the pasta in the baking dish, then spread the ricotta mixture on top and drizzle with the melted butter. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of Parmesan on top. Cover the pasta with foil and bake for 25 minutes, or until hot.

Preheat the broiler. Uncover the pasta and broil 4 inches from the heat for 2 minutes, or until the topping is evenly browned. Let stand for 5 minutes, then serve with the remaining sauce.

Bird Bread

Most small birds can get away with eating a high quality seed specific to their species with a little fresh fruit thrown in for good measure.

The parrot family however requires a tad (understatement!) more work!

Lemon came to us as a seed parrot as he had been fed only seed for the last year. He will now eat flavored oatmeal however he does not do this on a regular basis. He has no clue that he is supposed to eat fresh fruit and vegetables but we put them in his feed cups anyway hoping…someday! (and no honey…Snickerdoodles don’t count!)

To entice his taste buds I had purchased several types of premade mixes (rice, noodles, bread) and to date he just isn’t interested in eating any of them. My guess is that he just doesn’t realize it’s food!

I made him some homemade bird bread. Sliced it then froze the slices. We thaw out a few slices each week and keep the rest in the freezer. I still have not seen him eat any of the bird bread but we keep putting it in his cage either in his food cup or on his skewer.

This is the recipe I used. It makes two loaves that are extremely heavy.
I improvised the recipe a little and it turned out fine!

And don’t worry about the family eating any…It really does not look very appetizing to humans with all them damned veggies in there!

Jardy’s Banana Nut Bread

3 1/2 c. flour
2 t. cream tartar
1 1/2 t. baking soda
2/3 c. applesauce (or 2 apples chopped finely) (I used apples)
1 1/3 c. sugar
4 eggs, well beaten
2 c. ripe mashed bananas
1 c. chopped baby carrots (I used frozen mixed veggies, thawed)
2 c. pecans (I didn’t have any)
1 jar baby food, winter squash or sweet potato (optional) (I had some cooked frozen sweet potato that I used-2 ice cube size)

Bake 350 for about 30-33 min makes 6 mini loaves or approx 1 hour for 2 large loaves

Why the Palace Fell

Burning Question:
When do aftershocks stop being aftershocks?

The earthquake that destroyed Haiti was a magnitude 7. They have received many aftershocks under that the latest (this morning) being a magnitude 4.4. Now I can see earthquakes with a mag of under say…..4 being called an aftershock…but what about ones that are above 5? To me those are NOT aftershocks….those are earthquakes!

New Illness
For those men who can’t seem to keep their willies in their pants (Hello Tiger, Duchovny) all you have to do is say….you are a sex addict and all will be well. Go in for ‘treatment’ and come out shining.

GIVE ME A BREAK!
I’m not buying it for a minute.

TV Shows
I had been an avid fan of Grey’s Anatomy since day one. I made sure I watched it each and every Thursday. But at the end of last year…I guess I had had enough. I have not seen an episode since before Thanksgiving. For the most part the storyline was semi-believable but then there would be the random episode that was totaly…crap. Then you would have the crossover into Private Practice (I hate that show) which made me want to watch GA even less.

I have broken the GA cycle!

Being the true crime buff that I am…I now have two new shows that I watch each week…both of them on the Discovery channel.

Eco News: Recycling Carpet

Recycling Could Solve Pesky Polypropylene Carpet Problem
Written by Tina Casey

Yowzers – according to the U.S. EPA, about four billion, yes billion pounds of carpet go into the waste stream every year – much of it is used, some is new carpet left over from building construction. A lot of that carpet (and carpet backing) is made of cheap, durable polypropylene fiber, which makes up about 80% of the sales for commercial carpet.

Polypropylene, aka olefin, may be familiar to recycling addicts through its #5 plastic recycling designation, a number that can spell trouble. Until now, recyclers have been slow to adopt #5, partly due to the expense of separating it from other materials. Used polypropylene carpets on the other hand offer good potential for cost effective processing due to their sheer bulk and availability.

Polypropylene, Carpets and More
Because of its relatively low cost and high durability, polypropylene has a few other uses aside from carpets including ropes, plastic containers (margarine, yogurt, etc.), bottle tops and “living” hinges (think Tic-Tacs), lab equipment, auto parts, piping, furniture, consumer electronics and toys (cell phones, loudspeakers and Rubik’s Cube), lampshades, kettles, surgical materials, buckets, pitchers, model aircraft (in its foam form), car batteries, jewelry, stationery folders and storage boxes, coolers, air filters, insulated cable, diapers (disposable, natch), and activity wear (Under Armour). There is even polypropylene currency, if you can believe it. The annual global market for polypropylene adds up to about 45 million tons – a recycling gold mine ripe for the picking.

Polypropylene Recycling and Axion Polymers
Axion Polymers is a recycling specialist in the U.K. that has just announced it is ready to do some polypropylene picking, working with Carpet Recycling UK Ltd. and the public organization Envirolink Northwest. The company has developed a method for recovering polypropylene from used carpets and converting it into pellets. In this form the material is not suitable for manufacturing sensitive products such as lab equipment or food containers, but it could be reformed through injection molding into things like plant pots, compost bins and buckets. Last year Axion undertook trial runs on a small scale that showed promise, and now it’s ready to embark on larger trials to demonstrate cost-effectiveness.

The Future of Carpet and Polypropylene Recycling
Axion has found that the key to cost-effective recycling of polypropylene carpets starts at the beginning, by selectively targeting “pure” polypropylene carpets for the process. Carpets that contain mixed fibers are not suitable for this form of recycling, but at least it’s a start toward getting more #5 plastic out of the waste stream. In the U.S., carpet recycling is starting to take off in San Francisco among other places, and companies like Aveda, Organic Valley and Stoneyfield Farms are focusing on small #5 plastic items like bottle caps and yogurt containers.

Eco News: Washington Green Jobs

$6 million to support green jobs in Washington
by KING5.com and Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Washington state is receiving nearly $6 million in federal stimulus funds to promote clean energy jobs.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis says the money will go to the Washington State Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board to train about 4,700 people.

The grants are for people with disabilities, veterans and those who have been laid off.

Sen. Patty Murray said the grant will help nearly 5,000 Washington state workers get the skills and training they need to succeed in the growing clean-energy industry.

“Washington state is a national leader in the clean-energy sector and this grant will help ensure that our workforce remains strong and able to fill the jobs of the 21st century economy,” she said.

Training includes energy management and auditing.

5 teaspoon(s) ground cinnamon
2 1/2 teaspoon(s) ground nutmeg
2 1/2 teaspoon(s) ground ginger

Directions
In a stockpot, heat apple cider, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
