Taco del Mar Goes All Green With Containers

SEATTLE – Some companies are taking the initiative to try to reduce our carbon footprint. One fast food company is doing that by becoming one of the first in the country to go “all green” with its food containers.
Taco del Mar, in a joint venture with Trellis Earth, may be the first big restaurant chain in the country to go green.
“We are going to be changing 16 pieces total in our packaging, everything from our trays to our lids to our garbage bags to our utensils will now be earth friendly,” said Erin Gilbert, Taco del Mar marketing director.
It took some work and research. Trellis Earth had developed the containers, utensils and other products. They had to have structural integrity and also be able to preserve the food and, of course, be biodegradable.
“For example, plastic sits for anywhere between 100 to 200 years before it decomposes,” said Clayton Oswald, Trellis Earth. “It’s shocking and that’s why it’s such a big move for somebody to take on sixteen products in their entire company going green, because if you start thinking about the reduction and the carbon footprint, it’s huge.”
The cost of the new eco-friendly containers cost the company a little more, but they believe eventually they will become cheaper. Customers say they appreciate the commitment to go green.
“I feel it’s very important not only for our local area but globally,” said one customer.
“I have two children, so it’s very important we want to keep the earth as clean as possible,” said another.
Taco del Mar says they do not plan on raising their prices to cover the costs of the green containers.
Seattle consumers will soon see a lot more different green containers. A new city law requires fast food restaurants to get rid of their foam containers starting next year.
