Have you ever noticed that there just isn’t enough time in a day to get all of the things done that you wanted???

We appologize….we are running slightly behind schedule….

Pictures of our new packaging for the following soaps are in our camera but we just have not had time to download, edit and get them up on our website.

We hope to have that done by the end of this coming weekend…

I promise!

A New Dog Blog…..

I would like to introduce you to a fellow Biznik member…Sterling Peake and her new, wonderfully fantastic (at least I think so) blog….Green Dog Blog.

I love dogs….all dogs…and if I could have my way I would be bringing home every stray and abandoned dog that I could find to foster until a permanent home could be found….

But as things are (and I suppose it’s a good thing) we have our own two terrors (yes, I said ‘terrors’ not terriers) and unfortunately (due to the breed) they are not animal friendly so there will be no fostering for us any time soon….

I admit we (or should I say ‘I’) have not been very diligent in training our own dogs (bull terriers)…oh….they can sit, beg for biscuits, walk relatively nice on a leash and they have no trouble stealing the pillow out from under you but that’s about it…

I will be reading Green Dog Blog on a regular basis with the hopes that I can learn a thing or two about training and dog behavior with the hopes of applying it to our own ‘children’..

You know what they say…..

You CAN teach an old dog new tricks…..

I Learned Two Things Yesturday……

#1 – Do not put tomatoes in the refridgerator….it makes them watery (thanks Emeril!)

#2 There is a particular spider that seems to like mint -

I was out in our garden gathering fresh mint for a photo shoot (for the newest additions to our Gardeners Collection - Grapefruit Mint & Tuscan Tomato) and it seems that there is a particular spider that likes to make mint its home. No matter where in the garden I snipped the mint I found the same type of spider and web among the mint leaves. Being the spider lover that I am (NOT!) I made sure I shook the mint bunches throughly before bringing them inside. I just thought it a little odd that the same exact spider species was found all over the garden….in the mint……thank goodness they were small!

We unmolded the two new soaps, took photos of the slab before being cut, then of the soap loaves cut from the slab then finally the bar of soap cut from the logs. Even though the soap won’t be ready to sell for 3-4 weeks we will try to have the pictures up on the website by the weekend.

We had bunches of mint, mounds of tomatoes and a few grapefruit to round out the photo shoot …with the visual effect of the fresh food, the combined smell of mint and tomato (both fresh and soap), and me in my Crocs I had visions of Mario Batali dancing in my head (one of my favorite chefs!). The Tuscan Tomato fragrance is just what I envision Italy to be…..a hearty tomato with a hint of basil!

Canines in Need…..Can You Help???

Are you sitting down….

Kleenex in hand….

Cause I’m going to break your heart….

but you CAN help….I promise!

I recieved an email (which I will post below) over the weekend from Kelly Buschmeyer of Cuddly Canines.

Cuddly Canines is a California based dog rescue that saves puppies and dogs from a kill shelter. Foster families house and treat (if necessary) the rescues so they can be re-adopted out to loving homes.

As any animal shelter can tell you money is tight….especially when animals come in that need medical treatment.

Cuddly Canines is having a silent auction and need your products or services to auction off to help raise money to care for these animals. If you don’t have a product or service I’m CERTAIN they would be delighted if you could donate money for their cause…..even $10.00 would  help ($10.00 x 10 people = $100.00!….Do a little fundraising among your friends!)

Country Meadow will be donating several products and product packages to the Cuddly Canine silent auction being held on August 25, 2007.

If you are in the La Habra Heights area of California or plan on making a trip near there please contact Cuddly  Canines……they have the cutest dogs/puppies that are in desparate need of loving homes.

July 13, 2007

Dear Friend:
I am writing on behalf of Cuddly Canines Rescue. Our group is a non-profit canine rescue group.  Our main goal is to save the lives of unwanted pregnant dogs and their litters, as well as abandoned dogs that are left at high volume shelters that would ultimately be euthanized.  All of these animals are raised in foster homes until they are healthy and reach an age that they can be adopted.  We need to raise funds to help pay for our substantial vet bills that we have accumulated and we are willing to work hard for these funds.
We need your help with our upcoming silent auction to benefit Cuddly Canines Rescue on August 25, 2007.  We need items we can offer as auction items. We would appreciate a donation of any amount.  Your donation will help us achieve our goal for this fundraiser, which is $18,000.00.
Your generous donation of tickets/merchandise will be publicly acknowledged at our event through promotional announcements and flyers.  We feel that you will benefit from the community goodwill generated by your kind donation to the rescue group.  To learn more about our group or event, please contact Jodi Samird or Kelly Buschmeyer of Cuddly Canines Rescue at (562) 365-1252 or (714)713-6257; or via email at k_buschmeyer (at) yahoo.com.
Thank you for your consideration of our request, and we look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Sincerely,
Kelly Buschmeyer

We Declare July…..Lavender Month!

The lavenders are a genus of 25-30 species of flowering plants in the mint family and include annuals, herbaceous plants and shrubs. The most common species in cultivation is the Lavandula Angustifolia.

Lavenders grow well in gardens with the flower spikes used in dried flower arrangements and the fragrant flower buds in pot pourri. Lavender is also grown commercially for the extraction of lavender oil used in aromatherapy and skin care products.

History

Lavender has been in documented use for over 2,500 years. In ancient times it was used for mummification and perfume by the Egyptians.

The Romans used lavender oils for bathing, cooking and scenting the air.

In Medieval and Renaissance Europe the washing women were known as ‘lavenders’. They used lavender to scent drawers and dried laundry on lavender bushes.

During the great plague in 17th century London it was suggested that a bunch of lavender be fastened to each wrist to ward off deadly disease.

Lavender is a unique fragrance produced by a combination of 180 different constituents and is widely used in the perfume industry to add a top or middle note to commercial products.

General Growing Requirements

Full Sun – Grows best in full sun, 8-10 hours per day

Drainage – Lavender plants do not like wet feet. Needs good drainage

Soil – Sandy or gritty loam with a ph range of 6-8. Add lime to the soil if necessary

Climate – Most species will tolerate cold temperatures, wind, rain and snow as long as they have good drainage

Watering – Once the plant is established they are drought tolerant

Fertilizer – Lavender prefers poor soil quality. Over fertilization will result in a reduction of flower blossoms

Spacing – 24″ – 36″ apart to insure good air circulation

Propagation – Lavender often does not grow well from seed. It is best to take cuttings of your original plant

Pruning – Pruning needs to be done at least once a year starting when the plant is young. Trim back 1/2 – 1/3 of the plant to prevent it becoming woody in the center

Lavender Essential Oil Benefits

Physical – Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Pain Relieving, Healing, Insect Repellent

Ailments – Burns, Wounds, Insect Bites, Eczema, Dermatitis, Headache, Colds

Mind & Spirit – Depression, Balancing, Strengthening, Stimulating, Calming, Refreshing

Skin – Deodorizing, Circulation, Detoxifying
